CBD Dosage: How Much Should I Take?

CBD, a cannabis-derived compound, has actually been around for a long time. From its discovery as a therapeutic aid for epileptic seizures, it has inched its way into the spotlight. But is there a universal dose that works for everyone? What protocols should you follow with CBD dosing? It’s important to answer these questions as the amount you take can make or break its efficacy. 

Pointers for finding your dose

According to a 2017 review, CBD is a relatively safe compound with no potential for overdose [1]. However, correct dosing remains a vague area since people respond to CBD dosages differently. 

Thus, the main question of dosing is still one of the most frequently asked by people who want to try it.

First, we have to rule out the idea that there’s such a thing as a universal dose that works for everyone. There is no specific number that perfectly suits everyone but it’s no secret that starting at a low dose would be your safest bet.

The amount you should take depends on several factors, such as:

  • concentration per serving
  • consumption method
  • interactions with other medications
  • the condition you’re treating
  • your body composition

Here are some pointers to consider:

  1. The ideal starting point is to consult your doctor about the appropriate dosage and any potential risks, especially if you’re taking other medications.
  2. On other hand, some people start with a small dose and slowly increase if needed. This is also acceptable.

If you’re aiming for general wellness, a typical place to start would be a dosage of 5-10mg. However, if you’re taking it for a specific symptom, a good starting point is 20 to 40mg per day.  

If the dosage seems ineffective, you can keep increasing your dosage to 5mg every week until you feel that it is finally exhibiting effects. 

For example, for symptoms of chronic pain, you could start at 30mg. However, if this doesn’t seem effective, you could increase it to 35mg after a week. 

Observe for a week. If it still does not seem to relieve pain, you could raise your dosage up to 40mg the next week. 

3. Another thing to keep in mind is the amount of CBD in a product. For oils and tinctures, this can be particularly tricky. Some labels only indicate only the total amount of CBD in the bottle but don’t specify how much CBD there is in one drop.

Let’s say a single drop is about 0.05 milliliters. If it’s a 10-ml bottle, then there would be 200 drops.

Now, if that bottle has a concentration of 1000mg of CBD, each drop would contain about 5mg of CBD. So, if you want to take a dose of 30mg, you would have to take six drops.

Take note, these assumptions are generalizations based on an average functioning human body. 

How does CBD work in the body?

CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) to deliver its benefits. The ECS is an important system that maintains homeostasis or systemic balance in the body. It regulates primary functions like sleep, mood, immune function, pain perception, appetite, and many others.

When this system becomes compromised, our body is thrown out of balance, and we begin to experience changes that greatly affect our quality of life.
